Because of the prolonged Guatemalan civil war and the necessity of work, many of the men and women cannot read or write. In 2011 it was found that the illiteracy rate in the indigenous population is around 60%.
Typically, there is a single Government school in a large rural geographical area serving students in kindergarten through 6th grade. Very few children attend 7th-9th grade due to the lack of access to this level of education.
