Faith Sharing Missions

Sharing the love of Christ with our Maya brothers and sisters!

During our Faith Sharing Mission Trips we meet our Maya sisters and brothers in Christ who live in the mountainous communities of Guatemala.

  • We experience the daily life and struggles of an indigenous Maya man, woman or child and learn from them the blessings of a simpler life.

  • We visit multiple aldea (villages) over the course of the 7-8 day trip and our days mostly consist of mornings doing Home Visits and the afternoons in catechesis activities with various age groupings.

  • One to two SOS Faith Sharing mission trips are scheduled each year and teams are comprised of approximately 20 people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and parishes.

Home Visits

We break up into small teams and spend a little bit of time with various members of each aldea (village) in their homes. It is a great privilege to be invited into the homes of our Maya friends where we introduce ourselves, sing and pray together, and genuinely share ourselves in a short visit.

Holy Mass

The Eucharist is the center of our trips and when we have a priest traveling with us, we celebrate daily mass.

Catechesis Time

Based on the theme of the trip, we deliver an activity and lesson to adults, teens, and children of each aldea.

Special Trips

When time is available we may add a special trip. One year we visited the Mission church of Bl. Stanley Rother. Fr. Rother was a mission priest from Oklahoma who was killed in 1981 and was beatified in 2016. While his body is buried in Oklahoma City, his heart is in an altar in the church where he served for almost 13 years in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala.
